We Will Get Through This
By Allan Duncan
As a small business owner back in the early 2000s, my full-service golf retail business fell on difficulty- in another unprecedented time in our country’s history. In 2008 and 2009, the market tanked, a major airline announced bankruptcy, people were losing their homes, all while pensions were being cut for many retirees in our community. So many scared and financially hurting people like an echo of what we are dealing with today with this Covid 19 virus.
My business closed its doors after serving the community I grew up in, and where I was now raising my family. I loved the people who visited and shopped with us. To hear their stories about where they played- hole by hole, and how they wanted to improve their game. The best part of my job, to help them get the tools to make their game more enjoyable and better. That was now gone. But I rebuilt through the generosity and kindness of so many friends and family members.
The one thing I know about the golf family/community, it is a giving group and a charitable group. We give to hundreds and even thousands of organizations, causes, families, and individuals from the Tumble Creek Club in Washington to Kelly Plantation Golf Club in Florida and every course in between. We give year after year all while laughing with friends and enjoying our time as a family and community. All while playing a game we will never master.
As I think of all the wonderful life lessons golf has taught me to help me deal with this extraordinary time in our history. The one I continue to reflect back to is…” there is nothing you can do about what has happened, enjoy the moment, and look ahead to better position yourself for success”.
This current pandemic is serious, we, as a golf family/community, must do our part to be smart, thoughtful, and show courage. Smart in having an awareness around our personal space and habits. Thoughtful of others, their fears, concerns, and private struggles. And above all we must show the courageous and giving spirit that is in the fabric of this golf community. Because we know we will come out of this stronger with a greater appreciation for one another. This virus will end. Life will continue. We will get through this together. So, Let’s Tee it Up, America!!
